Case description

This 22-year-old female presented with intraventricular hemorrhage. The imaging diagnostics revealed a large arteriovenous malformation in the region of the central corpus callosum. The DSA reveals the arterial feeders, which predominantly originate from the anterior cerebral arteries, and the superficial and deep venous drainage of the AVM. At the time of the operation the patient did not display any neurological deficits.

Result

The postoperative DSA reveals the complete extirpation of the AVM with preserved perfusion of the normal brain parenchyma. The MR images reveal the extent of the corpus callosum resection in the central region.

Postoperatively the patient was initially comatose and developed a typical acute disconnection syndrome. 10 days later her condition had normalized and she was allowed to return home without displaying neurological deficits. The neuropsychological examinations performed one year after surgery revealed a complete normalization of the psychological performance to preoperative levels.
