Research interests

I am involved in epidemiological research on behavioral risk factors and psychological determinants of health behavior change since 1996. Since 2001 I am concerned with the development and testing of brief motivational interventions of health behavior change in entire populations. To get into touch with general population samples we used different settings such as primary care, dental practices, vocational schools. We also used random samples of the general population. In previous projects my key activities were to develop rigorous research designs and establishing research facilities (including the survey center at the ISP) that may contribute to evidence-based public health practice.

My work is inspired by the RE-AIM Framework, the Transtheoretical Model of health behavior change and Motivational Interviewing. A current focus of my research is on facilitating access to scalable individualized interventions building on modern information and communication technologies. Most recent projects are devoted to research questions on how to deal with complex combinations of behavioral risk factors, impaired mental health and deprived social resources.
