Profile of the University Medicine Greifswald
During the past two decades the University Medicine Greifswald (UMG) has consequently developed a specific profile within the given societal, economical, political and geographical conditions in research ("Forschung"), education ("Lehre") and healthcare ("Krankenversorgung"):
Key to this successful process was a constructive combination of a foresighted assignment of focal areas (e.g. Community Medicine, Molecular Medicine) with long-term and well-defined structural developments (e.g. new hospital buildings, integrated legal form).
Systematically and sustainably building up expertise in population-based medical research and in the comprehensive bioanalytical characterization of molecular principles as well as interconnecting both areas are at the heart of the UMG’s research profile and innovation potential. In the course of an increasing number of personalized approaches within future healthcare various links for intensified collaborations with companies from the healthcare sector emerge. The UMG is committed to continually deploy its strengths in epidemiology, health services research, prevention and molecular basic research to provide impetus for biomedical innovations and efficacious measures to improve or maintain health.
Hallmark of the University Medicine Greifswald are the complementary connection of the focal areas Community Medicine and Molecular Medicine and the resulting Greifswald Approach to Individualized Medicine (GANI_MED).

GANI_MED, initiated as a 5-year third-party funded project in 2009, systematically interconnects the expertises within the focal research areas and supplements them in an interfaculty approach with ethical and economic competencies to create an integrated translation platform for the development of individualized medical treatment and prevention concepts.
Strategic agenda “University Medicine Greifswald 2020”
As a result of a broad strategy process involving all occupational groups the strategic agenda “UMG 2020” was adopted in 2015. It defines mid-term goals and perspectives for research, teaching and healthcare guided by the vision statement “Centering on the individual”. At the same time the strategic agenda comprises specific objectives both on central and on an institution-specific levels whose realization is regularly and systematically monitored.
