The historical development of a pediatric surgery specialty at Ernst Moritz Arndt University Greifswald began when the ward was established in the University’s surgery clinic on June 9, 1969. Its start-up phase was shaped by Professor Dr. med. Wolfram TISCHER who devoted himself untiringly to its development, until 1986, when he heeded a call to join the University of Leipzig. Besides the specialized clinical aspects, various research avenues were opened, an increasing student teaching workload was taken on and new generations of pediatric surgical talent were recruited
The year 1986 marked the beginning of the consolidation phase and of the ever-tighter integration of pediatric surgery with pediatric and adolescent medicine. University Professor Dr. med Otto-Andreas FESTGE, who had been trained by TISCHER, took over the department’s leadership; in 1988 he was appointed to the pediatric surgery professorship. With the political change-over and German reunification, focus on the 1990 -1992 the university underwent staffing reforms . This was accompanied by institutional restructuring. Pediatric surgery became an independent, C-4 managed clinic and polyclinic for pediatric surgery, headed by clinic director University Professor Dr. med. Otto-Andreas FESTGE. Realizing that they had a chance to strengthen their respective specialties and create an integrated pediatric and adolescent medicine by cooperating closely, the directors of the pediatric medicine and pediatric surgery clinics fused them into the Center for Pediatric and Adolescent medicine in 1992. With this, they set Greifswald on a path of pioneering national and international growth.
In 1992, pediatric surgery moved to a newly-built bed facility in Sauerbruch Street and received its own operating room in 1995.
After Professor FESTGE was awarded emeritus status, University Professor Dr. med. Winfried Barthlen took over the clinic’s directorship on July 1, 2008.
A new phase began in the spring of 2008, with the opening jointly with the Gynecology and Pediatric clinics of the "Parent-Child Center" in the newly-built University Hospital. All specialty expertise now is under one roof in a "house of short distances".
