International Medical Student Project Greifswald

What does the IMSP do?

The International Medical Student Project is a mutual effort of the universities of Greifswald, Lund (Sweden), Szczecin (Poland) and Tartu (Estonia). Founded in the year 1996, the IMSP offers an opportunity for scientific and cultural exchange between interested medicine students. Issues concerning clinical procedures, research and ethics are discussed in joint conferences held every semester. The conference location rotates through the participating cities. Workshops and lectures are organized by students under the supervision of sponsor professors and offer the opportunity to discover and discuss different points of view on the subjects involved. Recent conference topics have included "Ethics and Genetics", "Pain" and "Rural Health".

Each of the conferences is organised by the host group and includes lectures and workshops, food, housing and recreational activities. In addition to scientific exchange, providing the opportunity for personal contact is a major goal. Official dinners, interesting city tours, Swedish singing, parties and even sports have been a part of previous conferences, fostering friendships across national borders and - if rumors are true - even a marriage.

The Greifswald group is made up of students from all semesters and meets regularly in form of a Journal Club that discusses subjects of the upcoming conferences. Of course work is not everything! Barbecues and Christmas parties are only some of the recreational activities that we meet for after work.

Medicine Students are welcome to join our journal clubs and take a look into our project. For more detail see the contact page and the sidebox.

In 2017 we opened the project to psychology students, who are interested in getting to know more about these topics and meeting people from foreign countries. We want to found a topic which is interesting for both student groups and the upcoming conference in Fall 2018 will be the first conference, where both groups are included. If you are interested – just ask!

How the IMSP began

In the beginning of the nineties, Professor Dr. Knabe (a professor at the Hygiene Department of the University of Greifswald) started a house call program, to introduce medical students to patient contact during their first semesters. His connections to Lund in Sweden and Stettin in Poland and the fact, that local Institutes of Community Medicine existed, helped the project evolve into an international joint venture of the three universities. With the leadership of Prof. Dr. Knabe and Prof. Dr. Hannich the program developed into an intercultural exchange discussing recent medical problems and ethical barriers.

Within the Community Medicine the first IMSP project started on the subject of "Alte Menschen"(elderly people). the results of a questionnaire study titled: "Der Ältere Patient - eine Herausforderung an die Generation der künftigen Ärzte" (The older patient - a challenge for the coming generation of physicians) where presented by Prof. Dr. Hannich in 1998, in a lecture at the 12th congress of the German Association of Medical Psychology in Hamburg and later published.

After the patronage of the IMSP project was shifted from the Medical Psychology to Prof. Dr. Dr. John of the Institute of Epidemiology and Social Medicine at the University of Greifswald, the second IMSP project started. This time it was a questionnaire study on alcohol abuse among medical students. The results of these studies resulted in publications in Lund and Stettin.

The third project within the IMSP was another questionnaire on "Euthanasia versus Palliative Care". Students of the Pomorska Academia Medyczna in Stettin where awarded for their work in the study.

In recent years the IMSP has been more focused on the international exchange and conferences. The patronage has returned to Prof. Dr. Hannich and the Institute of Medical Psychology. The next goal of the project is reinvigorating the focus on international exchange and encouraging students to participate in more international interaction.
